Like Westhay and Meare, the land is just a few meters higher in elevation than the sorrounding area which floods. This has been the case since prehistoric times when some of the ancient trackways were built to connect the islands.
Peat extraction is still carried out near to the village.
The village church is a 19th century building dedicated to St Philip and St James just on the junction with the road to Edington.
