Glastonbury is known for being a town with alternative views and New Age beliefs. The High Street is certainly unusual with mostly independent retailers instead of the more usual chain stores. Many of the shops cater to the New Age, spiritual, and mystical demand.
The alternative nature of the town in itself is a curiosity that makes it a tourist destination. As such, some of the shops have novelty gift items, but on the whole, most of them are working with a genuine commitment to an alternative way of life. There is quite a strong arts and craft movement as well as workshops on meditation and spiritual well being.
The town is only 1 mile away from the town of Street which is much more modern and has all of the usual chain stores. As such, Glastonbury is able to hold out against the commercial pressures of the big brands and maintain its culturally unique atmosphere.
Most people who travel to the town make a trip to the Tor and the Chalice Well, a spring at the foot of the Tor hill. The ruined abbey also attracts many visitors.
