Nyland Hill

Link to map.

To the south of Draycott and under the southern slopes of the Mendip Hills is a prominent hill that stands out from the flat flood plain. Nyland Hill has a few farms around and is a hamlet within the parish of Cheddar.

In once had an iron age fort on it and in the middle ages it had a priory which was part of Glastonbury Abbey. Only traces of either now remain and some of that is beneath the woodland which grows on one side of it.

The hill was known as Andrews Isle or Andersey and is briefly mentioned in the Doomsday Book.
