It is somewhat quiet now but was possibly once the captial of Wessex and played an important historical role.
It has been a market town since the middle ages and the center of the town has a large open stone plaza with a market cross called the Butter Cross. Next to it is the Market Hall and around the plaza are a number of old buildings now being used as art galleries or cafe's.
Just off the market plaza is St Michaels and All Angels Church. Its quite a large parish church and worth a look for the ceiling alone which is highly decorative and an impressive work of carving.
The town has a number of small shops located around the central car parking and a small super market. The shops tend to be small boutique types of various types including several full of antiques.
There is a strong connection with arts and crafts with several art galleries in the town.
